Clara Moto

Geneva Airport. July 2007. It’s a two-hour wait in Terminal 3 before boarding for sleepy-eyed Clara. Coffee is helping. She is headed for the Montreux Festival, to open for Matthew Jonson’s Cobblestone Jazz. Only a few weeks back, she was performing at Barcelona’s Sonar, making this her second appearance at a major international festival.

Born in Graz, a pretty Austrian town steeped in history, she grew up in a house filled with the instruments her parents had collected over time. There was a piano on which she practised as a teenager and a hi-fi system on which she played Kruder & Dorfmeister’s and De La Soul’s latest productions on repeat. Clara loved the idea and feel of vinyl. She cut her teeth playing records on Tuesday nights at her student bar. A small team began to form around her, soon followed by the launch of the Houseverbot label and the Birds parties, Postgarage’s flagship minimal nights. As one thing led to another, the club’s main resident – under her new “Clara Moto” moniker – spun her microgrooves all the way to the capital, Vienna, and its festivals (Elevate, Springs).

Autumn 2006. Melbourne. Clara was selected to attend the Red Bull Academy, a platform for up-and-coming talents, invited over the course of a few weeks to perfect their studio technique and meet professionals. Also part of the talent pool that year were Flying Lotus and Douglas Greed. The Academy organises tours for its best students, who get to perform at major European festivals on a dedicated stage. Which takes us back to where our story began: Geneva Airport. The Montreux Jazz Festival.

Chance encounter in Terminal 3. An enthusiastic young French Dj tells her all about the label he has just set up together with a few friends, his first protégés Francesco Tristano and Danton Eeprom and his desire to develop and nurture young talent. Agoria is his name, and InFiné the label.

Fast forward to Autumn 2007. InFiné releases Clara Moto’s “Glove Affair”, a firm-handed, delicious minimal house cut. One year later, and it’s with the release of “Silently”, a light and fluffy tune featuring a killer chorus that Clara, with the help of Mimu on vocals, reveals a strong penchant for pop.

As 2010 dawns and her first album is released, Clara provides ample proof of her allegiance to electronic music. Her affection for the genre comes in many forms, each imbued with her unique brand of femininity, and she embraces it in all its diversity and spontaneity. Clara takes life snapshots, fragments of emotions and her daily – and nightly – perceptions and turns them into sounds. So it is quite appropriate that the opening track should be named after a character in The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon. Clara Moto is polyamorous: the full-on intensity of simple little love stories moves her more than relational exclusivity agreements of epic proportions.

Silently get remixed

To keep you patient few more months before her first album, we wanted to make “Silently” sound louder, faster, weirder, rocker with three remixes by Kirk Degiorgio (B12, Planet-e), Carl Johan Elger (Manual) and the rising French shoegaze band Sissi Lewis.

On the B-side, Clara`s freshest take “Alma”, six minutes of satin-smooth Minimal House, right there to remind anyone that Moto´s style is inimitable.

MIMU used to sing a lot when she was a child. “But always secretly, when I was alone, being terribly embarrassed when someone would hear me accidentally.” She met Clara in Graz back in 2003. A that time, Clara was making her first step into djiing, while Mimu was into visual performances. No surprise if Mimu has been responsible for all the artworks included in the “Polyamour” album. Little by little, the duo starts playing in front of friends, mainly for fun. “She was the ear-leader and I was the eye age.” She admits. Freshly broken-hearted two years ago, Mimu started voicing her feelings through “songs and poetries, recording choirs and spoken word bubbles” and learning how to play piano, accordion, violin or guitar. She wrote the lyrics of “Deer & Fox”, adapted it herself already with various instrumentations but never they could sound so good as with Clara`s own production inputs. With her deeply felt organ notes Clara Moto put a spell on Mimu`s chorus crystallizing their complicity for one of the most refreshing hit of 2010. Exclusive B-side for this digital mini-single, “Hall” goes straight for the dance-floor. Twirling clicks & cuts, robotic vocals and celestial waves, is all what it took to Clara to make a perfect stomp.

Clara Moto´s new mini single is out 22nd February digitaly (except in France).

I know Clara because our ways crossed around 2003 in Graz. Small town, nice people. she was very into music, making her first steps with djing and i was very much into drawing and stuff, being student on a school for graphic design. As time went by we met more and more often on stage - she on the turning tables, me as a visualist. We got along very well, had a lot of fun, so we decided to make a "band", she just got herself some toys like the korg electribe and stuff and so we started doing first live acts. that has been very exciting to both of us. she was the ear-leader and I was the eye agent. At the audience just friends, so we were always assured the proper enthusiasm by the crowd ... All very romantic, so to say ...

I didn't do any music back then, because I was way too much into all the visual stuff (plus a big coward), although all the fancy tools were attracting my like the moth is caught by fire. i sang a lot when i was a little child, but always secretly, when i was alone, being terribly embarrassed when someone heard me accidentally. I used to repeat a melody again and again, afraid to lose it - once i got one that i liked, back then there was no possibility to preserve it, no way to record, no way to write down. Precious, unsteady, fragile treasures they were. And still are to me. Sounds are my obsession, melodies my jewels and words are my pearls.

I actually started to sing about 2 years ago. Freshly broken hearted, i started to articulate my feelings thru music and poetry. I just had the voice, I didn't play any instruments properly and so I started to record choirs and spoken word bubbles that expressed my notion of the world. I was totally intrigued by harmonics, combinations, rhythm and audio-montage. I started to dig in to studio and recording techniques, I started to play piano, accordion, violin, guitar and everything else that can be used to make sounds. I started to give concerts, sometimes with varying people, mostly solo with very minimalistic instrumentation and digitally processed field recordings i collected on various places.

Right now i am fascinated by electro-acoustic improvisation, by the technical aspects and the programming as well as by the wild and wide field of extended vocal techniques… by the mixture of traditional instruments and preparations with extremely sensitive live electronics.

I am very happy that the collaboration with my dear friend Clara came into being, I like her light and delicate approach to minimal techno, i like her musical sensitivity and and her intelligent humour that shines thru every little bit and byte…and i also have the impression that the friendship between us is totally audible in the tracks were i participated.

Mimu

Mimu Merz is a Vienna based graphic designer, media artist, singer and songwriter.
Her works mostly have a visual and auditive component, small video pieces and drawings made by hand, digitally brought into movement.

The artist describes her vocals as: „wayward phrasings and introspective lyrics, sometimes mumbled, sometimes pointed out clearly, like a salty finger in the wound of ongoing life. Puns and structures. Patterns and norms. Lofty love and wicked war.“
(quote from ELEVATE)

Live Acts and Projects
Mimu has a few different manifestations.

„mimu at nite“ - »experimental folk«
(www.myspace.com/listentomimu), a solo performance with voice, accordeon and laptop.
The accordeon is played minimalistically, either rhythmically or droning - according to the certain song, the voice is layered over that solid ground in a very flexible way.
the vocals are very narrative, the stories are clothed in metaphoric constructions of a flowery language.
The laptop provides distinct atmospherical components such as field recordings of varying places (such as woods, cities)
or incidents (fighting dogs, car accidents), or samples of old movies, that correlate to the context.
